UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller That Blends Silent Hill with Among Us Mechanics
The latest Day of the Devs online presentation unveiled several intriguing upcoming titles, but one especially has seized attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to blend the oppressive atmosphere of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven core of Among Us.
"It's a unique game where a girl harboring several human souls within her needs to flee from a maze of the psyche," explains developer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Shattered Consciousness
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed heroine who appears to be of teenage years. Within her reside four separate souls, each with their own fears and drives. These souls can seize control at will, unleashing their innermost terrors upon her without warning.
Judging by showcased footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a creepy medical facility, while additional clips show the main character navigating a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Horror
"What are you afraid of? What causes you uncomfortable?" poses game director Shun Sasaki. "High places. Small rooms. Authority figures. Things that appear minor to others can activate a deep instinct inside us. This game explores that idea — anxieties that are unique to each person."
The core gameplay loop revolves around managing the persona that surfaces at a particular time. However, these souls will switch against your will during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become exaggerated and assault the protagonist one after another. When the soul changes, so does the specific fear the player encounters.
Unsettling Aesthetics and a Fatal Decision
At first glance, UN:Me shares noticeable aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill franchise. The setting is populated by orderlies who all share the identical visage, with unnervingly wide smiles. Figures in the waiting room have enormous blooms growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring element, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.
Yet, UN:Me introduces a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four personas asserts that the physical form belongs to them," notes a developer. "During the game, you must determine who is real."
Once players have deduced a persona is fake, they must eliminate it. But, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Maybe you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing might be a fake. In any case, your decisions are irreversible."
UN:Me does not yet have a publicly announced release date, but it is can be follow on digital storefronts.
