Ultra-Conservative Ex- Legislator José Antonio Kast Elected as Chile Incoming Head of State.
In a decisive final ballot, far-right candidate José Antonio Kast has clinched the presidential office in Chile.
A Commanding Win
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast secured 58.17% of the vote, beating leftist candidate Jeannette Jara, who received 41.83%.
This signifies Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been lost by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 second round.
Agenda Focused On Security and Immigration
Known for his staunch socially conservative views and admiration for the rule of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was largely centered on promises to address increasing insecurity and radically curb immigration.
He frequently blamed immigrants, notably the approximately 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for security issues. Throughout the race, he gave an final demand for them to leave before the March 11 handover or face removal.
His proposals envisioned Trump-inspired measures such as erecting camps, barriers, perimeter fencing, and strengthening the armed forces presence on the northernmost border.
Within a Broader Shift
Several commentators view Kast's success as aligning with a larger rightward wave in the region, coming after this year's political outcomes in nations like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Nevertheless, other analysts further view it as a part of the established alternation of power between left-wing and right-wing leadership since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Governing Lacking a Strong Majority
Despite his decisive electoral victory, Kast is not expected to hold an absolute majority in the legislature, not in the lower house or the Senate, even when various conservative parties are combined together.
This political landscape could hinder his agenda, including a vow to cut public spending by billions within a year and a half—a measure for which he has yet to detailed a clear explanation.
"There are several questions about how a Kast presidency will operate that remain unclear because he has not explained the way he will implement them," commented a political science analyst.
The professor added, "Regarding economic policy, it is very likely we will see austerity policies associated with the right-wing. But where there is much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme across the campaign."
