The gravest potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, encompassing a searing 4C increase in average temperatures to a 2-metre surge in sea levels. Another scenario foresees a plunge of 6C in temperature following the collapse of crucial Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt farming and energy demand.
Plausible Events, Not Predictions
These effects, certain ones are connected to critical climate thresholds, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The scientists said that these projections addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK unprepared for worst-case results.
"The climate extremes we have outlined are not forecasts, but they are plausible," commented Nigel Arnell who led the analysis. "Britain has been formulating policy in the absence of the frameworks to assess catastrophic outcomes. We've now supplied decision-makers what they need to plan for future conditions they pray never occur, but must not overlook."
A Suite of Severe Conditions Projections
A second set of severe models sets out the projected severity of extreme weather between now and the year 2100. These suggest that temperatures could rocket in some months by up to 6C higher than historical levels, while precipitation could be 300% of typical amounts.
The probability of the extreme scenarios happening could not be calculated due to unknown factors about what action will be taken to combat climate change and how the Earth's systems will respond. This research was compared to defence planning or stress tests for the banking sector.

- Severe Heating: Global temperatures soaring past 4C by 2100 could transpire if international cooperation fails or if powerful amplifying effects such as the tropical forests becoming a net carbon source unleash its huge repository of carbon. This would cause intense and enduring heatwaves and droughts affecting the UK in summer.
- Ocean Circulation Failure: A critical sea current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and becoming unstable due to ocean warming. A collapse starting around 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Agriculture would be severely challenged and water resources would be completely altered," noted Arnell.

The research was requested as part of a official adaptation planning initiative. Earlier reports have cautioned that too little consideration was being given to low‐likelihood but high‐impact risks.
Official experts has said that the UK must "prepare for two degrees of warming" and evaluate the risks for severe warming. Past policy documents have been described as being "very weak" by some observers.
