Government Pushes On with ‘Complete Depopulation’ Strategy to Cull 400 Flightless Birds

Canada’s food inspection agency stated it aims to initiate a total removal of hundreds of ostriches at a farm following the country’s top court declined to halt the controversial slaughter.

Judicial Obstacles Cleared by Court Ruling

The recent judicial decision removed any legal impediment to commencing the slaughter.

The ostrich farm, located near the community of Edgewood, was first ordered in the month of May to cull nearly 400 birds, amid fears of an outbreak of bird flu.

Just days ago, officials seized control of the business.

Sixty-nine birds have already died after the emergence of a flu-like illness.

On Wednesday, the nation’s top court issued an temporary halt on the eradication directive as it weighed whether to take up the matter.

Governmental and Public Responses

The growing row over the ostriches – and a lingering distrust of government – have motivated protesters to descend on the property, with many broadcasting their frustration on social media.

The case has also entered the nation’s political sphere.

Earlier this fall, the opposition leader, Pierre Poilievre, was asked twice by reporters whether he supported the demonstrators.

The Conservative figure has avoided making specific comments on the issue, even though many within his political group voicing opposition against the cull.

He informed reporters the issue had been poorly handled from the start but avoided mentioning the word “ostrich”.

Cross-Border Interest and Offers

A number of prominent individuals from the United States have lobbied Canadian officials.

The US health secretary proposed to move the birds to his property in the Sunshine State.

An US wealthy businessman has also appealed with the authorities to reverse its eradication directive.

Scientific and Moral Arguments

The Canadian federal government said the food inspection agency was following a “stamping out” approach in order to limit the spread of avian flu, a move consistent with wider advice from global health organizations.

However, animal advocacy groups have called on the authority to conduct further testing on the birds to verify they are carrying the virus.

The ranch operators claimed that because the most recent fatality occurred on 15 January 2025, with the remaining birds appearing in good condition or healed, the group has developed at least partial herd immunity against the virus.

They have also cast doubt on the scope and reliability of testing on the birds.

Farm Spokesperson Response

On Thursday, the farm’s spokesperson, informed the press that the agency was killing healthy birds.

“These are prehistoric animals that have survived eons, but they will not survive the Canadian Food Inspection Agency,” she said.

A partner expressed he was concerned there’s – in my opinion – there’s no justice left”.

Court and Agency Findings

A federal court, on the other hand, determined that allowing the ostriches to stay alive could lead to the spread of bird flu to other animals, the livestock sector – or to people.

The agency has not announced when it plans to begin culling the birds.

Eradication Procedures

An older agency manual, acquired under freedom of information laws, states the birds can be killed by different means, the preferred being lethal injection, which requires multiple individuals: one to hold the bird by sitting on its back, one to hold the head, and a third to administer the injection.

Personnel can also use gas chambers or neck dislocation.

Members of the organization can only shoot the birds “as a last resort”, if they have a “skilled marksman” on site.

Recent Updates

As per media sources, soon after the court ruling, agency workers began setting up additional gear and flood lighting around a large hay-bale enclosure near the back of the bird enclosure.
