Educator Slain and Two Dozen Pupils Seized in Firefight at Educational Institution in Nigeria
Armed assailants have taken the life of an instructor and seized a minimum of 25 learners in an raid targeting a female high school in the northwestern part of Nigeria, authorities have confirmed.
The gang of attackers invaded the Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in the Maga locality within Kebbi State at approximately 04:00 local time on the start of the week, officials stated.
The assailants "engaged police personnel on duty in a firefight" before breaching the school's outer barrier and abducting the learners from their living quarters, according to a statement.
One member of staff was killed while trying to protect the students. Another staff member suffered bullet injuries and is now being treated medically.
Eyewitnesses described a considerable contingent of armed individuals, referred to locally as criminal elements, who arrived firing sporadically to cause panic.
Local residents disclosed to media that the armed men then led a number of girls into surrounding rural areas.
The police said they had deployed "additional police tactical units, together with army members and community security teams" to the area.
A systematic finding and recovery effort is currently ongoing in nearby woodlands and believed flight corridors.
In recent years, schools in northern Nigeria have increasingly been targeted for militant organizations, who routinely perform seizures to demand financial compensation or secure advantages in discussions with officials.
The incident in Kebbi State emphasizes the ongoing security challenge afflicting the area, leaving families in Maga in a state of fearful exhaustion as they expect and desire their children's secure homecoming.
