Both Deceased Students Named in the Ivy League School Incident as Law Enforcement Press On With Hunt for Gunman.
Two students who died in the recent violent attack at Brown University were honored at the start of the week – as a manhunt for their shooter continued following the freeing by Rhode Island officials of the sole person detained in connection in the case.
Remembering Ella Cook
The student Ella Cook, a second-year student from Alabama, was remembered as “an incredible, grounded, faithful, bright light”, per the Birmingham's Cathedral Church of the Advent, which offered condolences for her at a gathering on Sunday.
Cook was second-in-command of Brown’s branch of the College Republicans organization, according to the organization. The White House press secretary also shared condolences publicly, saying in part: “There are no words. Remembering her loved ones and companions, especially her parents.”
MukhammadAziz Umurzokov
The second fatality was MukhammadAziz Umurzokov from Uzbekistan, an Uzbek national in his initial year at the prestigious university, his family confirmed.
His name was verified by the Uzbek Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
“He was exceptionally gentle, witty, and bright. He harbored grand aspirations of entering the field of neurosurgery and helping people,” Samira Umurzokova, his sister said in a online post.
The Shooting Incident
An additional nine individuals were injured in the weekend shooting in the school of engineering of Brown’s campus in Providence, during the university's examination week.
Authorities said by the end of Sunday that a 24-year-man taken into custody in a police operation at a hotel about approximately 17 miles from the university earlier in the day was set to be freed.
“A perpetrator remains free,” stated Peter Neronha, Peter Neronha.
Neronha explained, “Occasionally a probe goes down a path, and then you need to change course and head another way, and that is the current situation over the last day or so.”
Public Fear
Brett Smiley, Brett Smiley, noted: “We know that this is likely to cause fresh anxiety for our public”.
The shooter began shooting inside a lecture hall in the engineering building on Saturday afternoon, discharging in excess of 40 shots from a 9mm handgun, a police source told the Associated Press.
Officers that searched the lodging recovered a pair of pistols and magazines when the person of interest was detained, as was reported.
Those Hurt
Of the nine hurt, a single scholar was discharged from care, stated Christina Paxson, Christina Paxson. Seven more were in grave but unchanging health, and one remained in critical care, officials reported on Sunday.
Durham Academy, a independent school in the city of Durham, said Kendall Turner, Kendall Turner, was among those critically wounded.
Additional Memorials
Tributes were paid to Cook at a church service in Birmingham on Sunday. A reverend stated, “She was an incredible, grounded, faithful bright light not only during her upbringing... but at the university she was an incredible light in that specific location as well.”
A group leader, Martin Bertao, shared a message from the club. “Ella was recognized for her bold, brave, and kind heart as she aided her club and other students,” he said.
An American diplomat, Jonathan Henick, said he was “deeply saddened” by the student's death in a message. “We offer our heartfelt sympathies to his relatives, friends, and schoolmates and lament the passing of his promising future.”

The weekend's murders at Brown, the country's seventh most historic higher education institution with about 7,300 undergraduate and three thousand graduate students, took place amid one of at least nearly 400 mass shootings documented across the United States so far in 2025, according to statistics. Monday was the 349th day of the year.
