As Swimmers Ran From Attack, Viral Image Depicts Rescuer Dashing ‘Pedal to the Metal’ To the Scene.

Alexandra Ching, a lifelong local of Bondi, views the famous shoreline as her personal space. On a recent Sunday evening, she, similar to other neighbors, noticed loud noises echoing through the neighbourhood.

“Everyone did, but I reasoned it was daylight and you couldn't spot any lights,” Ching recounts. Stepping out of her residence, she observed people “streaming up Bondi Road”. The faces they wore made it clear something was wrong.

As she stood on the avenue, speaking to a pair who had run up the slope soaked, she noticed someone approaching behind her. It was a beach patrol officer, running at full speed in the direction of Bondi unshod from the nearby Tamarama beach – roughly 1.5km – while carrying a defibrillator.

“I noticed a person utter ‘excuse me’, and when I spun around I spotted this flash of blue,” she recalls. “He was just flying past. He was the only one heading in the direction that all the others was trying to flee, carrying that large equipment and unshod … He was sprinting at something that certainly every part of you would instruct you to run in the reverse way.

“Absolutely no pause, but just completely pedal to the metal racing.”

An Iconic Image of Heroism During Chaos

The photo that Ching snapped of the lifeguard, later named as Jackson Doolan, was widely shared as a prime example of moments of courage in the aftermath of the violent incident.

Andy Reid, a second lifeguard, noted that Doolan, called “Jacko”, sprinted from Tamarama beach to assist the remaining crew at Bondi, as well as to aid emergency personnel, officers and medical teams treating many victims.

Local Response and Support

Doolan’s actions was part of a broader narrative to emerge from the community, with the beach facility adjacent to the site of the incident serving as a makeshift medical station. Reports indicate that fellow lifeguards were also seen taking action, including entering the surf to assist people who were struggling.

Following the events, statements of support circulated widely. One post shared thanks for the responders who demonstrated that “goodness will always triumph over evil”.

The team of rescuers published a statement, saying they were “still trying to comprehend what happened”.

“We are grateful all for your supportive messages and encouragement. We are deeply moved by the kindness for our personnel,” the team stated. “In time, we will share our stories in the aim that it helps those involved.”

Official Commendation

Waverley council, the administrative organization that employs many professional beach safety officers, stated that the staff acted heroically from the instant the violence began right into late that evening.

“People have shared so many moving accounts, but the popular picture of Jackson Doolan, running from Tamarama to Bondi with a AED so he could help assist the injured is incredible,” said a council representative.

“These individuals demonstrate altruism every day in ensuring our world-famous coastlines protected for the public, but what we observed on Sunday should be commended.

“While we mourn and grapple with the terror of this heinous act of violence, I think it is important that we reflect on just how much light we have witnessed in the midst of such hatred.”
